Strify, bürgerlicher Name unbekannt, ist Sänger der deutschen Jugendzimmerband Cinema Bizarre. Diese mischt Glamrock-Zitate und melodiösen Gesang mit japanischen Visual-Kei-Looks und wird deswegen häufig mit Tokio Hotel verwechselt. Als Vertreter einer Generation, die von Kindesbeinen an vernetzt war und ganz natürlich von sich sagt, dass sie ihr Selbstbewusstsein über Google gefunden habe, spricht Strify hier über den Auto-Tune-Effekt, Psychoterror in Online-Communities und den nicht digitalisierbaren Rest der Menschheit.

Strify, du bist zwanzig Jahre alt. Was bedeutet es für dich, ein ›digital native‹ zu sein, also der ersten Generation anzugehören, die mit dem Internet aufgewachsen ist?
    Ohne Internet wäre ich nicht ich, wäre ich nicht Strify. Ohne Internet wäre ich heute auch nicht Sänger von Cinema Bizarre oder überhaupt einer Band. Das kann ich mit Bestimmtheit sagen, weil ich mich noch genau erinnere, was für eine graue Maus ich war, bevor ich mit etwa zwölf Jahren zum ersten Mal ins Internet ging. Ich war damals ein totaler Außenseiter, war sehr introvertiert, hatte in der Schule kaum Freunde und fand in der Kleinstadt mit 60.000 Einwohnern, aus der ich stamme, auch sonst keine Leute mit ähnlichen Interessen. Ich war unendlich gelangweilt davon, dass meine Schulkameraden alle gleich aussahen, dass alle dieselben Jacken und Hosen trugen. Ich schaute mich um und sah nichts als einen großen Einheitsbrei. Trotzdem versuchte ich mich anzupassen. Wenig erfolgreich: Mein Spitzname damals war »Harry Potter«. Ich sah wirklich aus wie Harry Potter!

Im Internet fandest du bessere Looks und neue Freunde?
    Genau. Mein Vater hatte sich zwar noch eine Zeitlang erfolgreich gegen das Internet gewehrt, aber als wir es dann endlich bekamen, machte es bei mir sofort klick. Im Internet merkte ich: Ich bin nicht allein! Es gibt noch andere Leute, die so drauf sind wie ich! Ich erfuhr von der Visual-Kei-Szene, fand diese androgynen, fantastievollen Looks, die in dieser Szene getragen werden, toll und gewann dann sehr schnell Selbstvertrauen. Als ich nach den Sommerferien wieder zurück in die Schule kam, erkannte mich niemand wieder.

Die Online-Welt hatte also einen starken Feedback-Effekt auf deinen Alltag?
    Auf jeden Fall! Das Internet ist in dieser Hinsicht natürlich ein zweischneidiges Schwert, das ist mir klar: Internet-Communities können auch den negativen Effekt haben, dass man sich in ihnen total verschließt. Man lebt dann zwar in seiner tollen Online-Fantasiewelt, aber im wahren Leben wird man noch viel schüchterner und unglücklicher als vorher. Ich habe das anfangs selbst erlebt: Als ich im Internet Neuling war, ging ich eine Zeitlang kaum noch vor die Tür, hing nur noch in Foren ab, hatte tausend verschiedene Messengers abonniert und surfte durch zig verschiedene Communities – bis ich merkte, dass meine Online-Freunde diese Art der Kommunikation tatsächlich für das wahre Leben hielten. Es kam zu ziemlich unangenehmen Situationen, zum Beispiel bekam ich von Leuten, die ich noch nie getroffen hatte, bitterböse Messages à la: »Warum meldest du dich nicht mehr? Wie kannst du mir das nur antun?« Ich konnte dann nur antworten: »Geht’s noch?! Ich war nur kurz auf Toilette!«
 
Inwiefern war gerade Visual Kei für dich wichtig, also eine vor allem über Kleider-Codes kommunizierende Szene, deren Aufstyle- und Make-up-Praxis man auch als ›Second Life ohne Internet‹ bezeichnen könnte?
    Man muss verstehen, dass Visual Kei aus der japanischen Kultur stammt, also einer Kultur, die sehr viel strenger ist als die europäische. Für Kinder und Jugendliche gibt es in Japan unglaublich viele Vorschriften – wie lang die Frisur zu sein hat, wie weit die Strümpfe über das Knie zu ragen haben und so weiter. Alles ist genau geregelt. Deswegen gibt es in Japan wenig Raum, sich individuell auszuleben. Visual Kei bietet da ein Ventil. Man trifft sich am Wochenende, stylt sich komplett auf, schlüpft in einen Charakter hinein, flieht für ein paar Stunden. Ich habe Visual Kei für mich aber nie als Flucht begriffen. Ich wollte mich nie mal eben kurz in einen Charakter begeben, sondern ich wollte ein eigener Charakter werden! Und das habe ich dann auch bei anderen deutschen Visual-Kei-Anhängern festgestellt: Sie gehen auch so zur Schule, sie stylen sich jeden Tag, für sie ist der Look absolut alltagstauglich.

Deine Bandkollegen von Cinema Bizarre hast du auch über das Internet kennengelernt?
    Ja, und zwar ebenfalls über die Visual-Kei-Community. Als Erstes lernte ich den Gitarristen der Band kennen, Yu. Mit ihm mailte ich im Internet schon hin und her, bevor wir uns dann zum ersten Mal bei einer Visual-Kei-Convention trafen. Dort lernten wir dann auch gleich noch Kiro kennen, unseren heutigen Bassisten. Das war die Initialzündung für Cinema Bizarre. Wir blieben über E-Mail in Kontakt, tauschten Ideen aus und suchten mit dem Ziel der Bandgründung über das Internet noch nach weiteren Mitgliedern. Ohne das Internet hätte es unsere Band also tatsächlich nie gegeben. Hätte ich die Jungs nicht auf diese Weise kennengelernt, hätte ich nach meinen ersten eher unerfreulichen Versuchen als Sänger in der Schulband und im Chor wohl nie wieder daran gedacht, Musiker zu werden. Alle Mitglieder von Cinema Bizarre haben dort, wo sie aufgewachsen sind, ähnliche Erfahrungen gemacht wie ich. Wir waren alle Außenseiter.

Heute sagt ihr als Cinema Bizarre ganz bewusst: Wir sind keine klassische Garagencombo, wir sind eine Internet- und Style-Band, wir machen Schluss mit den üblichen Rock-Authentizismen.
    Ich finde, authentisch ist, wer sich nicht verstellt, das heißt, wer sich nicht als etwas verkauft, was er nicht ist. Britney Spears ist in dieser Hinsicht die authentischste Popsängerin überhaupt, denn sie tut erst gar nicht so, als sei sie eine große Künstlerin. Sie ist einfach das, was sie ist: eine Performerin. Punkt. Darin ist sie total ›echt‹. Wir haben uns nie als typische Rock’n’Roll-Band ausgegeben. Warum sollten wir auch? Wir sind keine. Unser erster Bezugspunkt war nicht Musik, sondern es waren Styles und Looks. Ich habe vor Kurzem ein interessantes Zitat gelesen von Jason Brandon von den Killers: Er sagte, dass durch Nirvana und Grunge in den frühen neunziger Jahren der ganze Spaß aus dem Rock’n’Roll verschwunden sei. Das würde ich unterschreiben. In den Siebzigern und Achtzigern gab es schon eine ganze Reihe Künstler und Bands, die sich ebenso über ihren Look definierten wie über Musik – tolle Leute wie David Bowie, Grace Jones oder Adam Ant! In den Neunzigern kam dann aber Grunge auf, und wer sich als Musiker fortan Gedanken über seine Optik machte, galt als eitel und war deswegen nicht mehr authentisch. So funktionieren Cinema Bizarre aber nicht! Wir wollen ein Gesamtbild kreieren – ich will nicht nur Musik spielen, sondern auch Bilder in die Köpfe der Menschen schicken!

Daher auch ein Bandname wie Cinema Bizarre, also der Verweis auf das Kino als Raum, in dem Bild und Ton zusammenfinden?
    Genau. Wir wussten zu Beginn nur, dass wir unbedingt das Wort ›Bizarre‹ in unserem Bandnamen verwenden wollten. Dann stolperten wir im Internet über das Filmgenre namens ›Bizarre Cinema‹, eine LoFi-, Trash- und Splatter-Sparte der siebziger Jahre, die wir bis dahin alle gar nicht kannten. Wir mochten aber den Begriff und das, wofür er steht – auch weil Kino eben der Ort ist, an dem sich Bild und Sound verbinden. Wir drehten den Begriff dann einfach um. ›Cinema Bizarre‹ – das passte zu einer Band, die nicht nur gehört, sondern auch gesehen werden will.

Wenn du sagst, das Internet habe dir geholfen, deine Identität zu finden, beobachtest du andersrum auch, dass Cinema Bizarre heute über das Internet Teenagern bei der Selbstsuche helfen?
    Die drei 13-jährigen Jungs, die in Neuseeland Cinema Bizarre nachmachen, sind mir im Internet noch nicht begegnet. Aber in Frankreich hat mir mal eine Journalistin erzählt, dass es im Internet eine Band gibt, die uns schon als einen ihrer größten Einflüsse nennt. Und natürlich haben wir über das Internet viel Kontakt mit unseren Fans, die uns immer wieder sagen, dass sie genauso sein wollen wie wir. Wenn ich Fans auf diese Weise helfen kann, selbstbewusster zu werden und ihren Weg zu finden, dann ist das für mich natürlich das Größte. Denn das wird ja heute oft vergessen: dass man Kindern Selbstbewusstsein geben muss. Heute ist alles so multimedial und global, man hat auf so vieles gleichzeitig Zugriff, was einerseits toll ist. Andererseits kannst du dich dabei aber auch ganz schnell ganz klein fühlen, vor allem als Kind – du weißt dann gar nicht mehr, für welche der tausend Identitäten, Szenen und Codes du dich eigentlich entscheiden sollst. Deswegen sage ich unseren Fans immer wieder: Es ist toll, wenn ihr uns kopiert und euch so stylt wie wir – aber es ist genauso okay, wenn ihr euch selbst etwas ausdenkt und einfach das macht, worauf ihr gerade Lust habt.

Wie erklärst du dir das Vertrauen, das eure Fans euch online entgegenbringen? Immerhin sprechen sie im Grunde mit Kunstfiguren: Ihr tragt alle ausgedachte Pseudonyme, eure bürgerlichen Namen und eure Herkunft sind nicht bekannt, und auch sonst weiß man so gut wie nichts über euch oder euer Privatleben.
    Jeder Mensch hat Dinge, die er lieber für sich behält. Nicht jeder muss alles über mich wissen, und nicht jeder muss meine gesamte Familie kennen. In einem normalen Job will man ja auch nicht, dass alle Kollegen jedes einzelne Detail über einen wissen – und trotzdem vertraut man sich gegenseitig. Es ist eine Art Selbstschutz – vielleicht auch aus jener Erfahrung heraus, die ich vorhin beschrieben habe: dass die Online-Realität sonst sehr schnell übergriffig werden kann, dass man also irgendwann nicht mehr aufs Klo gehen kann, ohne sich abzumelden. Egal wie wenig wir preisgeben von unserem Privatleben: Wir sind kein Fake. Wir sind das, was wir zeigen. Das, was wir zeigen, ist das, was wir zeigen wollen. Das suchen wir uns genau aus. Und wir haben genug zu erzählen – über unsere Reisen, über Konzerte, über Treffen mit Fans. Deswegen bleiben wir interessant. Wir stehen ständig in Kontakt mit unserer Online-Community, ich betreue eine Facebook-Fanpage und unsere MySpace-Seite, und wir benutzen seit Neuestem auch Twitter.

Der Titel eures neuen Albums, »ToyZ«, liest sich auch, als sei er direkt einem Tweet entnommen.
    Ja, das große ›Z‹ stammt aus der Internet- und Chat-Sprache. Unser Gitarrist Yu hatte die Idee. Wenn er im Internet Messages postet, dann benutzt er diesen ganz seltsamen, eigenen Slang, den man teilweise kaum versteht.

Zum Beispiel schreibt er auf seine ganz eigene Weise »Rawk« statt »Rock«.
    Genau. Oder er ersetzt jedes ›J‹ durch ein ›Y‹ – das hat er aus dem Japanischen übernommen, weil man ›Y‹ im Japanischen weich ausspricht, wie im Deutschen das ›J‹. Er hört sehr viel japanische Musik, irgendwann hat er das dann in seinen Slang übernommen. Es hat fast ein bisschen etwas von einer coolen Geheimsprache. Eine eigene Internet-Geheimsprache, die es den Suchmaschinen auch ein bisschen schwerer macht. Irgendwann hat Yu dann ›Toys‹ mit großem ›Z‹ geschrieben: ›ToyZ‹. Das sah auch visuell sehr gut aus.

Abgesehen davon, dass ihr euch im Internet kennengelernt habt, ist Cinema Bizarre auch eine volldigitale Band in dem Sinne, dass alle eure Produkte – Musik, Videos, Fotos –, offensiv digital bearbeitet sind. Photoshop, Sampling, Auto-Tune etc. Benutzt ihr für eure Texte auch schon Übersetzungstools?
    Nein, das wäre ja toll, wenn ich meine Texte auf Deutsch schreiben könnte und sie dann nur noch in die Übersetzungsmaske von Google pasten müsste. Von Übersetzungstools halte ich aber vorerst nichts. Auch die englische Coverversion von Echts »Weinst du« auf unserem neuen Album ist nicht so entstanden. Dichterische Sprache geht bei digitalen Übersetzungen komplett verloren. Ansonsten stimmt es aber natürlich: Wir sind volldigital, unsere Ästhetik ist sehr von Computern bestimmt. Das hat damit zu tun, dass wir nun mal alle mit digitalen Tools aufgewachsen sind. Unsere Spielzeuge waren digital, heute ist mein Lieblingsspielzeug mein MacBook. Von Technik und ihren Möglichkeiten umgeben zu sein, ist für uns vollkommen natürlich. Letztens las ich ein Interview mit Dave Gahan, der sich darin nochmal daran erinnerte, dass elektronische Musik in den Anfangstagen von Depeche Mode noch nicht als ›echte‹ Musik wahrgenommen wurde. Das hat sich heute komplett geändert!

Gibt es abgesehen von Sprachübersetzungen etwas, das ebenfalls nicht digitalisierbar ist?
    Das ist natürlich der Mensch! Persönlichkeit. Gefühle. Maschinen werden den Menschen niemals ganz ersetzen können – denke ich zumindest. Menschen sind viel zu kompliziert gestrickt, sie denken unlogisch, haben Stimmungsschwankungen, sind manchmal total unberechenbar: Selbst wenn es einmal gelingen sollte, so etwas wie eine künstliche Intelligenz zu erschaffen, könnte die nicht genauso denken und fühlen, wie Menschen es tun. Das ist der analoge Kern des Ganzen. Deswegen werden in Zeiten wie diesen ja auch Konzerte wieder so wichtig: Konzerte sind die Momente, in denen echte Menschen auf der Bühne stehen, sie sind die Grundessenz des Musikbusiness, die nicht digital errechnet werden kann. Deswegen sitzen wir auch ständig im Flugzeug und noch mehr im Bus, auf dem Weg zum nächsten Konzert.

Nervt es aber nicht manchmal, seine eigene Biomasse ständig in Transportmittel zu hieven, nur um irgendwo auf der Welt zu beweisen, dass hinter den ganzen Rechenleistungen ein leibhaftiger Mensch steckt? Würdest du nicht manchmal gerne ein digitales Duplikat losschicken und selbst zu Hause bleiben?
    Bis jetzt ist Reisen für mich eine reine Freude. Wenn mir vor sechs Jahren jemand gesagt hätte, dass ich mit zwanzig schon fast die gesamte Welt gesehen habe, dann hätte ich das nie geglaubt. Ich kann mich wirklich nicht beschweren. Wir fliegen zum ersten Mal nach New York, unser Konzert dort im Highline Ballroom ist ausverkauft, und die Leute grölen alle unsere Songs mit – das ist das, was ich tun will! Deswegen mache ich Popmusik!

Wie findest du es, als Sänger deine Stimme mit überdrehtem Auto-Tune-Effekt zu hören?
    Auto-Tune ist für mich zweierlei – einerseits eine natürliche Erweiterung meines Stimmspektrums, also eine neue, interessante Klangfarbe, andererseits eine eingebaute Reflexion von Digitalität. Es gibt Songs, bei denen wäre Auto-Tune das Schrecklichste, was man ihnen antun könnte, und es gibt Songs, bei denen sorgt der Effekt für den entscheidenden Kick. Letzteres ist etwa der Fall bei »ToyZ«, dem Titelstück unseres neuen Albums. Das war schon von vornherein eine sehr elektronische Nummer, im Prinzip ist es ein digitalisiertes Kinderlied. Hier sorgt der Auto-Tune-Effekt noch für ein Extraquäntchen Charakter.

Und wie bewertest du den Effekt bei anderen Musikern?
    Ich fand »808s & Heartbreak« toll, das letzte Album von Kanye West. Allerdings nutzt sich der Auto-Tune-Effekt auf Albumlänge spürbar ab, wird auch etwas anstrengend. Ein anderes gelungenes Beispiel ist der Song »Hide and Seek« von Imogen Heap. Er ist als A-cappella gesungen, ohne Instrumente, der Song besteht nur aus Stimme und Auto-Tune-Effekten. Ein echtes Statement unserer Zeit. Warum sollte man seiner Kreativität nicht auf diese Weise freien Lauf lassen?

Viele nehmen den Auto-Tune-Effekt noch immer nicht als ästhetische Entscheidung wahr, sondern als Lizenz zum Pfuschen.
    Ja, die Leute denken, man könne heute mit Auto-Tune einfach jeden ins Studio stellen! Und natürlich: Dieses Plug-in erlaubt es, sogar Leute präsentabel klingen zu lassen, die sonst keinen einzigen Ton treffen. Doch was man eben nie automatisch hinbekommen wird – und was auch kein Plug-in je schaffen wird –,  ist, beim Zuhörer Gefühle auszulösen. Emotionen und Leidenschaft in der Stimme, das sind  Dinge, die kein digitales Tool reproduzieren  kann. Diese Spuren des Menschlichen, diese  Spuren von Persönlichkeit sind genau das, was  die Leute an einem Song am stärksten berührt – und weswegen sie ihn nicht nur ein Mal, sondern immer wieder hören wollen.
